As Christmas comes into my heart, I see challenges to “keep Christ in Christmas” by refraining from saying Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas. Although well-meaning, these challenges create division, not unity. It’s like thumping one key on a piano without considering the other 87. There is no melody, and there can be no harmony.
Happy Holidays encompasses all fall and winter holidays. And Xmas is most interesting: “Chi (X) is the first letter in the Greek word for Christ. In the early days of the Christian church, Christians used . . . X as a secret symbol to indicate their membership in the church . . . So, Xmas and Christmas essentially mean the same thing” (Grammarly, 12/8/14).
Whether I wish you Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, I wish you joy this holiday season. (I will share my testimony of Christ as my Savior if you ask.)
